The five things that determine your final cost.
Every EV charger quote in LA varies based on five variables. Understanding them helps you read your quote.
1. Distance from your electrical panel to the charger location
Every foot of conduit, wire, and labor adds $20–$40 to your install. A charger 5 feet from your panel runs $400 in wire and labor. A charger 80 feet away in a detached garage runs $2,500+.
2. Whether your electrical panel needs upgrading
LA homes built before 1990 commonly have 100A or 125A panels. A Level 2 charger needs a 60A or larger dedicated circuit. If your panel is already maxed out, you need a 200A upgrade — adds $1,800–$3,500.
3. Indoor garage vs outdoor install
Indoor (attached garage): cheaper. Outdoor (driveway, detached carport): requires weather-rated enclosure, GFCI protection, sometimes trenching. Adds $300–$1,500.
4. Charger choice
Tesla Wall Connector: $475. Emporia: $399. ChargePoint Home Flex: $699. Wallbox Pulsar Plus: $649. Tesla Universal Wall Connector: $595. Ford Charge Station Pro: $1,310. Lucid Connected Home: $1,200.
5. Permit fees
Every LA-area city charges differently for the electrical permit. Range: $150–$350. LA proper is on the higher end; smaller cities (Burbank, Glendale) are cheaper.

Stacking rebates to maximize savings.
LA homeowners can stack multiple rebates. Total achievable: $1,500–$3,500 off your install.
Tier 1: Utility rebate (highest priority)
Pick the program that matches YOUR utility — you only qualify for one:
- LADWP (most of LA city, Sherman Oaks, parts of Studio City): Charge Up LA! up to $1,500 (income-qualified) or $750 (standard)
- SCE (LB, Beverly Hills, Manhattan Beach, Pasadena-adjacent): Charge Ready Home up to $1,000
- PWP (Pasadena): Residential EV Charger Rebate up to $600
- GWP (Glendale): EV Charger Rebate up to $599
- BWP (Burbank): EV Charger Rebate up to $500
Tier 2: Federal 30C Tax Credit
30% of installation cost (up to $1,000) for chargers in low-income or non-urban census tracts. Many LA neighborhoods qualify — check at IRS.gov.
Tier 3: Time-of-use rate savings (ongoing)
Not a rebate but adds up: most LA utilities offer EV time-of-use rates that cut overnight charging costs by 40–60% vs standard rates. Saves $300–$800/year for typical drivers.
